I think Drew and I both have our incredible wives to thank for becoming such big fans of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir—I know I personally have very fond memories of time spent in the valley with my wife, Kim. Drew and I also have the utmost respect and enthusiasm for the Willamette Valley, its wines, its people, and thus are so excited to release our inaugural Pinot Noir from the Ribbon Ridge AVA. I first made a trip to the area in the late 2000s while in college and was easily won over by the pure beauty of the area and of course was seduced by the incredible wines. In 2011, I was lucky enough to be working under my longtime mentor Chris Figgins when he launched his Pinot Noir project. I experienced four vintages of crafting Pinot Noir with him and so was ecstatic to make this venture back with the 2017 vintage for Bledsoe Family Winery. This wine, from the Ridgecrest vineyard planted in 1980, and the first vineyard to be planted on the Ribbon Ridge AVA, is two clones—Pommard and Wadensvil—planted in Willakenzie soils, and was fermented in small, open top tanks with 30% whole cluster inclusion. We then aged the wine without racking for 16 months in 50% new French oak. The wine brings me back to Willamette—earth, cranberries, black tea—and will evolve for days of drinking without giving up its life or energy. On the palate there is fantastic acidity, balance, incredible richness—all things I am proud of and all at just a bit over 13% alcohol. Writing these tasting notes I am incredibly excited about this wine and seeing as how we made such a small amount, I urge you to act swiftly.
